Muslim Civic Coalition Celebrates Nigerian Islamic Association’s Successful Fundraising Gala for Southside Islamic Center

Chicago, IL – April 25, 2026 - The Muslim Civic Coalition extends warm congratulations to the Nigerian Islamic Association (NIA) on the resounding success of its Fundraising Gala, marking a major milestone toward the completion of the Southside Islamic Center.

Years in the making, the Southside Islamic Center project has been driven by the dedication of the Nigerian Islamic Association, the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC), and the broader Muslim community. The new masjid is poised to become a vital addition to Chicago’s South Side.

More than a place of worship, the Southside Islamic Center is envisioned as a comprehensive community hub offering health and social services, a dedicated funeral preparation space, Islamic education classes and programming, youth services, and additional resources designed to meet the needs of the growing Muslim population in the area.

The Fundraising Gala itself was a vibrant and joyful celebration, showcasing the rich colors, culture, and traditions of Nigerian heritage. Attendees described the event as warm, welcoming, and deeply unifying.

The Muslim Civic Coalition team and Civic Impact Fellows were honored to attend and connect with NIA community members. Several allied elected officials also participated, including Illinois State Senator Karina Villa and Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez. Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Nigerian Islamic Association, the Southside Islamic Center, and the wider Muslim community in Chicago.

“The Coalition is grateful to have been part of such a meaningful gathering — one rooted in unity, service, and a shared vision for a stronger, more connected community,” the organization stated.

The Muslim Civic Coalition continues to build collaborative relationships across Chicago’s diverse Muslim communities. Organizations, masjids, or student groups interested in partnering for sponsorships, civic engagement and voter workshops, or tabling opportunities are encouraged to reach out at info@muslimciviccoalition.org.
