Muslim Civic Coalition Holds Staff Retreat to Reflect, Strategize, and Strengthen Teamwork
Chicago, IL – April 24, 2026 – The Muslim Civic Coalition recently gathered its full staff for a day-long 2026 Staff Retreat, marking a meaningful moment of reflection and alignment as the organization approaches its 10-year milestone.
The morning focused on strategic planning and building internal clarity. Teams reviewed organizational charts, team structures, workflow, and responsibilities to strengthen teamwork and ensure everyone has clear direction and support. Staff also celebrated major wins, accomplishments, and organizational “firsts,” then engaged in focused discussions on strategic priorities for the year ahead. These sessions fostered open dialogue, reinforced collaboration, and helped align the entire team around shared goals for 2026.
In the afternoon, the group shifted to hands-on team building at the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) pottery studio. Staff spent the afternoon throwing clay and creating together under the guidance of facilitator Ikhlas.
“We are so grateful to IMAN for hosting us and creating such a warm, creative space,” said Executive Director Amina Barhumi. “In a time when the work feels heavy and the world is on fire, it’s critical that we take a step back — as teams, as organizers, and as people — to reflect on what we’re doing well, where we need support, and how we align on next steps. I am grateful to be in these spaces. I am grateful for our team. And I am hopeful this is just one small step in many strides to be more strategic and intentional in the months and years ahead.”
The retreat served as an important foundation as the Coalition gears up for a formal strategic planning process. By centering the voices of staff who are on the front lines of the work every day, the organization is ensuring that its next chapter is shaped by those closest to the mission.
The Muslim Civic Coalition extends its deepest thanks to Seedo’s Bakery for generously providing breakfast and lunch, and to Ikhlas Hakeem, Collaborative Arts Manager and Organizer at the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) – Chicago, who facilitated the wonderful and restorative pottery team-building session at IMAN’s Beloved Community Ceramic Studio. Moments like these strengthen the team and help sustain the vital work ahead.
