Important Illinois Voter Dates:
August
August 5, 2026: First day to apply for a vote by mail-in ballot. Request one here.
September
September 24, 2026: First day to vote early or by mail. Check with your local election authority for details.
October
October 6, 2026: Last day for paper voter registration. Online voter registration remains open.
October 7, 2026: First day of grace period for same-day in-person voter registration and voting at election authorities and early voting sites; continues through Election Day.

You will need 2 forms of valid ID (one should list your current address). This can include: passport, driver’s license or state ID, social security card?, Medicare or Medicaid card, credit or debit card, lease, mortgage or deed to home, insurance card, utility bill, bank statements, etc.
October 18, 2026: Last day for online voter registration. Grace period registration is still available in person at election authorities and early voting sites.
October 29, 2026: Last day to request a mail-in ballot from your election authority
November
November 3, 2026: Election Day! Polls open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

You must be a U.S. citizen.
You must be at least 17 years old on or before the date of the Primary Election and turn 18 on or before the date of the General or Consolidated Election (16-year-olds may preregister to vote).
You must live in your election precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day.
You must not be serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of a conviction.
You may not claim the right to vote anywhere else.

You can register to vote online in IL at https://ova.elections.il.gov.
What you need to register to vote online in IL:
IL driver’s license or state ID
Last 4 digits of your social security number
Birth date

You can register to vote in person at any of the following locations: County Clerk's Offices, Board of Elections Office, City and Village Halls, Township Offices, Driver's License Facilities

In Illinois, if you miss the online or paper voter registration deadline, you can register to vote at an early voting location or on your Election Day polling location.

Vote by Mail
Request an absentee ballot/mail-in ballot from your election authority here.
Once you receive your ballot in the mail, follow instructions carefully and vote!
Mail as early as you can.
IMPORTANT: Mail postmark rules have changed. Ballots are now postmarked when processed, not when you drop them in the mailbox. This can cause 1–2 day delays.
