Muslim Civic Coalition Joins Congresswoman Ramirez and National Allies to Introduce Renewed Mandate for Human Rights

Chicago, IL — May 13, 2026 — The Muslim Civic Coalition stood alongside Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) and leading human rights organizations today at the U.S. Capitol for the official introduction of the Renewed Mandate for Human Rights, a sweeping 30-page resolution that calls for the creation of a United States Human Rights Commission and a bold recommitment to universal human rights.

The resolution outlines a progressive roadmap for Congress, demanding policies that prioritize affordable housing, universal healthcare, climate resilience, humane immigration reform, the abolition of detention, the dismantling of the Department of Homeland Security, and the redirection of Department of Defense funding. It explicitly calls on Congress to reject policies rooted in racism, colonialism, capitalism, imperialism, white supremacy, and patriarchy.

Cosponsors include Representatives Yvette Clarke (NY-09), Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Rashida Tlaib (MI-13), and Nydia Velázquez (NY-07).

Endorsing organizations include: IMEU Policy Project, Center for Constitutional Rights, Women Cross DMZ, Chicago Religious Leadership Network on Latin America, MADRE, Climate Justice Alliance, Illinois Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, Jewish Voice for Peace Action, Equality Illinois, The Peoples Lobby, and the Muslim Civic Coalition.

Joining Congresswoman Ramirez at the press conference were representatives from IMEU Policy Project, MADRE, Climate Justice Alliance, and other national allies.

Amina Barhumi, Executive Director of the Muslim Civic Coalition, delivered powerful remarks at the event:

“My own family in Lebanon lives under constant bombing and the threat of ethnic cleansing. When I call my mother each day, the roar of Israeli aircraft overhead drowns our conversation into fragments of fear and the unknowing if I will see her again.”

She added: “Here at home, innocent children have become devastating symbols of dehumanization: six-year-old Wadee AlFayoumi… and five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos… When even the youngest and most innocent are treated as disposable, no one — absolutely no one — is safe.”

“Congresswoman Ramirez’s resolution brings the moral clarity this moment demands. It connects the pain from Chicago to Palestine to Lebanon to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Puerto Rico… rights that should never need to be demanded, yet here we are.”

The Muslim Civic Coalition proudly endorses the Renewed Mandate for Human Rights and stands ready to work with Congresswoman Ramirez and our national partners to turn this vision into concrete policy that protects the global majority and delivers justice, dignity, and collective liberation.
