Muslim Civic Coalition Executive Director Speaks at Congresswoman Delia Ramirez’s Women Lead Summit
Chicago, IL – April 9, 2026 – On April 1, 2026, Executive Director Amina Barhumi represented the Muslim Civic Coalition as a panelist at Women Lead: A Summit on Intersectional Solidarity and Human Rights, hosted by Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez at Northeastern Illinois University El Centro in Chicago.
The powerful half-day summit brought together a multiracial, multi-sector coalition of women leaders from across Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. At a time of escalating international campaigns of terror, fear, and war, the gathering focused on strengthening coalitions and advancing strategies to legislate, litigate, and agitate in defense of our communities domestically and globally.
Amina Barhumi participated in Breakout Session 4: “Freedom from Imperialism and the Right to Self-Determination,” moderated by Beth Miller of Jewish Voice for Peace. Joining distinguished panelists including Alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez, Mary Kay Hazel of Heartland Alliance International, and Kate Alexander of MADRE, she spoke forcefully about the urgent connections between imperialism abroad and state violence in our streets.
Amina Barhumi, Executive Director of the Muslim Civic Coalition, stated: “Congresswoman Delia Ramirez has shown real courage in Congress. She understands that we must connect the dots between struggles that impact us all. We have yet to see reparations for Black and Indigenous people after centuries of ethnic cleansing on this very soil. Yet the genocide against Palestinians continues, and illegal wars targeting women and children rage in Iran and Lebanon. These are not separate fights. As a survivor of war, I am reminded daily that freedom and liberty are never given, they must be fought for. Those of us in the U.S., who have known both nothing and everything, bear a profound responsibility to stand with those enduring the same violence and dispossession abroad. This summit reminds us that our robust, diverse coalition is the force that will move these issues forward.”
This timely summit underscored the urgent need for intersectional solidarity as communities face coordinated threats to their hard-fought rights. The Muslim Civic Coalition remains committed to building bold coalitions and standing in solidarity with women leaders across racial, faith, and issue-based lines in the fight for justice.
