Muslim Civic Coalition Statement on the San Diego Mosque Shooting

(CHICAGO, IL – May 18, 2026) – The Muslim Civic Coalition released the below statement following the deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego today, where multiple community members were brutally killed in a horrific and unacceptable act of violence.

“We are outraged and heartbroken. We stand with the San Diego Muslim community in this moment of immense grief and pain. We send our heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to the families of the victims, including the heroic security guard who laid down his life to protect others, and to every person mourning this tragedy,” said Executive Director Amina Barhumi in a statement. “This attack comes amid a dangerous escalation of anti-Muslim violence, fueled by toxic rhetoric, dehumanization, and hostile policies that continue to target our communities nationwide and across the globe. An attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego is an attack on all of us who believe in a just, inclusive, and peaceful society.”

To our Muslim communities in Illinois and across the country: We urge heightened vigilance, especially with Eid al-Adha fast approaching. May we come together to grieve, support, and care for one another.
