Announcing Our New Executive Director, Amina Barhumi
Chicago, IL – February 5, 2026 – After a thoughtful and comprehensive succession process, it is with deep gratitude and great confidence that the Board is honored to announce Amina Barhumi as the new Executive Director of the Muslim Civic Coalition.
Two years ago, Amina returned to Illinois and reconnected with us after many years. That reconnection was more than a reunion - it was a recognition. We knew this was an opportunity to work together in the present while intentionally planning for the future of the Coalition. From our earliest conversations, there was shared clarity about values, vision, and the long arc of what strong civic justice must look like for American Muslims - and our allies across the nation.
Amina brings to this role a wealth of experience in civil rights, advocacy, and organizational leadership. Prior to joining the Coalition, she served as Executive Director of a civil rights organization in Ohio, where she led community-centered advocacy, policy engagement, and organizational growth efforts. Over the last two years at the Muslim Civic Coalition, Amina has served as our Advocacy and Policy Lead, helping to shape our policy priorities, strengthen partnerships, and advance impactful civic and justice-centered initiatives across Illinois.
We are entering a critical moment for the Muslim Civic Coalition - one in which our strategy is clear, our team is strong, and our path toward long-term financial sustainability is defined. models the kind of intentional succession we believe in and want to cultivate for our young adult leaders: leadership that is mentored, prepared, values-driven, and rooted in continuity. We believe leadership handoffs should strengthen institutions, not destabilize them - and Amina’s appointment reflects that commitment.
As part of this transition, the Coalition’s founding leadership - including Reema Kamran and myself - continues to serve on the Board, supporting Amina in any way she needs. At the same time, new leaders have joined our organization, bringing fresh energy, skills, and perspective. Together, this combination of continuity and renewal makes us stronger than ever before. Our faith reminds us of the sacred responsibility of leadership: “Indeed, God commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people, to judge with justice.” (Qur’an 4:58)
We have full confidence in Amina’s ability to lead this organization forward - honoring what many of us built together over the past decade while shaping what comes next with courage and care.
Please join us in welcoming Amina Barhumi into this role and offering her your trust, collaboration, and support as she leads the Muslim Civic Coalition into its future.
