Amina Barhumi is a dedicated servant leader with over twenty years of experience transforming organizational culture, engaging communities, and mobilizing grassroots power for equity and systemic change. As a seasoned nonprofit executive and strategist, Amina has cultivated a powerful network across advocacy, organizing, and policy to uplift impacted communities and advance long-term transformation.
She currently serves as the Advocacy and Policy Lead at the Muslim Civic Coalition, where she drives policy rooted in the lived experiences of American Muslims. Based in Illinois—home to the largest per capita Muslim population in the country—Amina helps model state-level solutions that can be scaled nationally. She supports the passage of community-driven legislation, mobilizes leaders and constituents, and galvanizes civic power to ensure Muslim voices, stories, and perspectives are not only heard but codified into the policies and structures that shape our nation.
Amina’s work is deeply influenced by her engagement with youth and her belief that advocacy must be guided by the future they will inherit. This generational responsibility fuels her passion for creating policies and spaces where young people can thrive with dignity, equity, and safety.
She previously served as Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations of Ohio (Columbus & Cincinnati), where she led the organization from crisis to stability—expanding services, building partnerships, and positioning it as a leading force for civil rights and advocacy in the state.
Over her career, Amina has led more than seventy advocacy campaigns and programs, significantly increasing civic engagement and rebuilding trust across diverse communities. She has responded to moments of hate and crisis with steady, values-driven leadership—retaining and unifying teams, launching new initiatives, and convening coalitions that advance equity, belonging, and collective power.
Amina brings a comprehensive perspective as a practitioner, transformational leader, and thought partner. Her expertise spans strategic planning, political campaigns, program implementation, narrative change, and fund development. She helps organizations rethink how they lead, communicate impact, and center the people they serve—with clarity, compassion, and purpose.
A proud Chicago native, Amina is deeply committed to the American Muslim community and to driving change from Illinois to the national stage. Amina holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago and is currently pursuing a graduate degree in Nonprofit Management and Policy at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
